We’ve included this British indie drama, released in summer 2020, in our Films We Love category. Screen Machine team member, Fiona, says: “This is a really funny wee gem of a film, which parents of teenagers in particular will relate to. Monica Dolan is brilliant as the single-parent Mum struggling through the summer holidays. I know her best from TV series W1A, but she’s been in lots of other excellent TV and films, such as Wolf Hall, Catastrophe and Alan Partridge: Alpha Papa”.”

A teenage metalhead (Earl Cave, son of Nick) and his librarian single parent mum (Monica Dolan) find themselves failing to get along over a British summer in this charming British comedy, which is the directorial debut from Simon Bird (The Inbetweeners).

This witty unassuming film is complemented by a soundtrack from Belle & Sebastian and features entertaining supporting roles from Rob Brydon, Alice Lowe and Tamsin Greig. A beautifully observed sensitive portrait of family life that parents of teenagers will particularly enjoy.

“Monica Dolan exudes warmth, intelligence and resilience as a woman whose self-confidence has taken knocks but who’s still out there fighting.” Time Out

“perfectly played and neatly observed” Empire

“Utterly charming and blessed with a pair of terrific central performances, this is an extremely accomplished piece of work that marks Bird out as a director to watch”
