That Obscure Object of Desire (1977)

  • Comedy, Drama
  • 1h 42m

After a middle-aged man pours a bucket of water over on a train platform, he boards the train and recounts to the surprised passengers his history with the woman. Through a series of flashbacks he describes how he became enamoured with her, but she rejected his interest. Over the passing hours, the passengers learn more about this complex and unconventional relationship, which may not have reached its conclusion.

The critically acclaimed final film by Spanish director Luis Bruñuel uses the unique technique of casting two women in a single role, creating dreamlike and questionable natures to the flashback scenes, and went on to receive multiple Oscar nominations.

“a seductive work that exemplifies, even as it studies, the perversity of human desire” The Criterion Collection
